Our latest innovative financing case study explores Tajimat Pujut – “good living” – an Awajún-led REDD+ and forest-restoration initiative in Peru’s Alto Mayo region.
Sixteen Awajún communities, represented by FERIAAM, are working to conserve and restore approximately 231,000 hectares of Amazon rainforest. Community Life Plans guide conservation agreements and help ensure that decisions reflect each community’s priorities, cultural values and vision for the future.
The initiative combines grants, government incentives, sustainable enterprises and prospective carbon revenue. Conservation International Peru is a co-proponent and technical partner, supporting Life Planning, carbon accounting, monitoring, conservation agreements and the development of sustainable businesses, while building Indigenous capacity for communities to increasingly manage the initiative themselves.
The case studies in this series look beyond the source of finance to the practical “engine room” behind the model: which in this case include strong Indigenous governance, secure land tenure, long-term technical support, transparent benefit-sharing and investment in livelihoods such as cacao, coffee, vanilla and medicinal plants.
Huge thank you to the Awajún communities of Alto Mayo, FERIAAM and Conservation International Peru, whose leadership, knowledge and experience underpin this work.
