The Kimberley Land Council (KLC) innovative financing case study explores how Indigenous-led savanna fire management projects in Western Australia’s Kimberley region are generating carbon credits while supporting right-way fire, ranger employment, stronger governance and long-term care for Country. 

Seven Indigenous-led projects are registered under Australia’s ACCU Scheme. By carrying out strategic cool-season burns, Indigenous rangers reduce the frequency and extent of intense hot-season wildfires, lowering greenhouse gas emissions and storing more carbon in the landscape. Together, the Kimberley projects have generated 1.7 million Australian Carbon Credit Units, with revenue reinvested in fire management, jobs and community priorities. 

The case study looks beyond the source of the finance to examine the practical “engine room” that makes the model work. It also offers readiness questions, key risks and a practical checklist for communities considering whether a similar mechanism might fit their own goals and context.
